Over the past few months, each House has been working on their submission for the new House Film!

This is the first time this house event has run, so there was a real buzz as students from across all year groups worked together on the many aspects that go into film making. Each house was given the theme of ‘Time’ to make a short original film for submission before the end of our Spring term.

Each film was judged remotely over Easter by a selection of specialists with a background in Film. Those judges were Anthony Fabian, award-winning director, producer and writer; Yemi Sawyer, owner of award-winning LiteSwitchTV production company; Chris Mitchell, award-winning composer; and Kezia Tomsett; composer, orchestrator and vocalist across Film, TV and Theatre.

The results were announced during collect on Monday 20th April, after a screening to the whole school of each film. Bentsi-Enchill’s ‘Mugged’ saw a daring heist by students to capture a mug from a teacher’s classroom. Cadbury’s ‘Detention’ followed seemingly separate stories that were all connected during Friday detention by one common person. ‘Time and It’s Effects’ by Fox took us through flashbacks of a grumpy man to discover why he became that way. Finally, ‘Understudy’ used one continuous shot to show the mounting pressure of a drama production struggling to find someone to fill an empty role last minute.

There were lots of laughs and applause as everyone spotted their classmates and teachers across the real variety of features made. A definite highlight for everyone was Math’s Teacher Duncan’s dramatic fall to the ground as he mourned the loss of his mug.

When it came to the awards it was a sweep for Tubman in nearly every category, with Fox taking it home for Best Editing:

Best Pre-Production – Tubman

Best Production Design – Tubman

Best Marketing – Tubman

Best Performance – Max, Tubman

Best Sound – Tubman

Best Editing – Fox

Best Teacher Cameo – Ellie, Head of Rugby and Tubman House Clerk

Best Picture – Tubman

Reece Kelly-Gould, Head of Film and TV, reflected on the event as a whole: “Having industry professionals as our judges was a genuine treat, and hearing their praise for the films was incredibly uplifting. They were struck by the level of professionalism and the sheer talent on display. The real joy for me, though, was the screening itself. Seeing the films with the whole school and witnessing the audience reactions was wonderful. The school has been absolutely abuzz today with everyone talking about their favourite moments. Above all, it was lovely to see students from every year group getting involved and supporting one another. It has been a truly special experience to witness that kind of community spirit, and the bar has been set high for next year!”
