The annual Christmas Concert is a community favourite at Leighton Park with the Orchestra and Senior Choir delivering seasonal showstoppers and the programme packed with smaller ensembles, duos and solos across brass, strings, winds, guitar, voice.
The line up included a wide variety of Christmas tunes with traditional carols such as ‘We Three Kings’ and ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’ alongside popular classics like ‘Jingle Bells’ and ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’. The audience were delighted to take part in the frantic stand up/sit down actions of ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’; a perennial favourite leading into the interval, where refreshments were generously served up by the Friends of Leighton Park Music.
The concert concluded with a rousing festive medley by Leroy Anderson, ‘Christmas Festival’ by the Orchestra but for the Music Department, it wasn’t over! Less than 24 hours later they were back in the Michael Malnick Centre for the second concert of the week; the next in the Lunchtime Piano Concert Series!
Nine soloists performed piano solos under the glow of the Upper Foyer’s Christmas tree lights and a select but supportive audience were pleased to enjoy a calm moment of musical refreshment in their busy day.
The Music Department has been nominated twice for ‘Music Department of the Year’ and deliver an astounding number of lessons through 27 peripatetic music teachers to our talented students of whom 60% learn at least one instrument! This makes performance opportunities such as the Christmas Concert and the Lunchtime Piano Concert even more important in building confidence and offering performance opportunities for our students to share their work. We are the only school in Europe to partner with Yamaha as part of their Education Partnership Programme, with Steinberg as a Certified Training Centre and with Sontronics, microphone specialists providing our students with access to top-quality instruments, music technology and professional workshops.
