Runners Raise Money for Charity
Our kind-hearted athletes were proud to support their House charities on Monday 6th October through some opportunistic fundraising! Taking advantage of the crowds gathered for the cross-country races, the charity leads for Tubman and Fox set up thirst-quenching beverage stalls. The Social Enterprise group, our charitably focused version of Young Enterprise, provided fund-raising fun through sponge-throwing at staff and students!
Tubman’s House Clerk, Ellie Smales, was pleased to get involved: “Tubman House raised £184.70 which will be going to The Cowshed whom we have worked with for the past three years. I’m incredibly proud of our students for their charitable efforts in selling drinks to thirsty spectators and runners at House Cross Country. We’ve built a wonderful partnership with The Cowshed and are excited to see how the funds raised will make a positive impact on the lives of people in and around Reading.”
Fox House, who also sold drinks generated £276.50 for Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice. Jake and Naina, the House charity leads for Fox this year, explained, “It was a group decision to vote to support Alexander Devine this year. I wanted to volunteer for them but they said I was too young. I think we did so well because we had a card machine and we used dynamic pricing, increasing the price when our supply was getting low. We sold drinks and cleared out all our stock!”. The charity shared a letter with the Fox House students saying, “Without your kindness, we simply would not be able to provide support to families, nor reach our service development milestones and provide over 22,800 hours of care to children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions across Berkshire and the surrounding counties. You truly make everything possible. We hope that understanding the difference you make will leave you inspired for your fundraising in 2025 and beyond.”
Tubman’s charity co-lead, George thanked his partner, Fin, and fellow Sixth Former, Lucas, for their involvement in the afternoon’s efforts and reflected: “The Cowshed’s work really resonates with the Tubman community and we’ve had a relationship with them for a while. It made sense to stick with them again for our House charity this year. I’ve worked with Tubman House charity for a while and now to be the co-lead who people go to for events and for organising, it’s really exciting. I’m looking forward to whatever comes this year.”
