Sixth Form Historians from the International Baccalaureate and A Level History courses ventured to South Kensington on Monday 27th April focussing their exploration of the Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum on the North American photography exhibition.
Head of History, Helen Tatlock, commented, “We’ve had a brilliant day and the photographs captured some interesting perspectives on the topics from our A Level and IB History courses.”
London’s V&A is the world’s largest museum of applied arts, decorative arts, and design, holding over 2.8 million objects spanning 5,000 years of human creativity. It features extensive collections of fashion, textiles, sculpture, furniture, and photography, and is housed in a building which is a masterpiece of Victorian design, featuring a stunning central garden courtyard.
History A Level at Leighton Park offers a global, analytical curriculum covering the illusion or reality of the American Dream in the twentieth century, apartheid in South Africa, and Ireland and the Union. The course focuses on critical evaluation of historical issues and the North American photography exhibition provided some excellent original source materials for the cohort. The IB History course is offered at both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) and focusses on critical thinking, comparative analysis, and multiple perspectives, featuring topics like civil rights movement in the US, apartheid and authoritarian regimes, alongside a study of rights, politics and the Cold War in the Americas for Higher Level students.
The History Department is keen to bring the subject to life and ensure that students have opportunities for experiential learning, such as the Sixth Form V&A trip or lower down the school, visits to the Tower of London and the British Museum.
