A Delicious Lesson in Sustainability

On Monday 23rd March, Year 5 pupils from St Mary’s Prep School took part in an engaging and hands-on Sustainable Cookery Workshop, where they explored how food choices can impact the environment while developing practical kitchen skills.

The session began with an introduction to sustainability, encouraging the children to think about where food comes from and how making thoughtful choices—such as using ingredients that have been frozen when in season—can help reduce waste and support the planet. Or how eating beef a couple of times a week contributes over 600kg to greenhouse gas emissions – the equivalent to heating the average UK home for 95 days!

Excited to get started, the students got stuck into making a delicious fruit crumble. Using carefully prepared ingredients, they practiced a range of skills, from mixing the crumble topping to preparing the fruit. George particularly enjoyed “cutting the apples,” while Arrya shared her excitement, saying, “It was so fun because we got to learn about sustainability and make apple crumble,” adding that her favourite part was “mixing the crumble topping.”

The workshop wasn’t just about cooking—it also highlighted the importance of teamwork and responsibility. The children did a fantastic job of tidying up afterwards. Avani summed up the experience perfectly, describing the day as “fabulous” and explaining, “My favourite part of the workshop was making the food and cleaning up.”

Overall, the visit offered a fantastic blend of learning and enjoyment, leaving the students with a deeper understanding of sustainability—one of our school’s core values—alongside enhanced cooking skills and their own tasty crumble.
