Our Sixth Form English students were privileged to see the critically acclaimed production of Tennessee Williams’ masterpiece ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ on Thursday 6th February. Starring Olivier Award Winners, Paul Mescal and Anjana Vasan in a three-week run at the Noel Coward Theatre in London’s West End, the production was described by The Telegraph as ‘heartstopping’.
Set in the heat of a New Orleans summer, the play explores the relationship between Blanche, her estranged sister, Stella, Stella’s husband, Stanley, and some dark secrets of the past which threaten the future of them all as reality and illusion interwine. This is a powerful play exploring themes of desire, gender, power, social class, fantasy and death, with a complex plot offering plenty of scope for discussion by our English A Level students.
“Watching ‘Streetcar’ in the theatre was such an amazing experience, getting to visualise the set and characters, and seeing the scenes which we read and analyse in English felt unreal. I really enjoyed the trip and the fact Paul Mescal was playing Stanley made the play even better.” enthused Eli. Kemi agreed commenting: “After studying ‘A Streetcar named Desire’, it was really interesting to see the play finally coming to life, and to receive the full visual picture.”
