Lower and Upper Sixth Form students were excited to meet the Liberal Democrat challenger for the constituency of Beaconsfield, Anna Crabtree, on Friday 12th May. It was an opportunity for Anna to ask our young people about the issues they feel are important as the 2024 General Election preparations get under way. The meeting also provided a chance for students to find out more about the Liberal Democrat party, and what their plans are.
Head of Politics, Richard Duckett, noted “We found out that the Lib Dems are keeping their plans ‘close to their chest’ so that the other parties don’t steal their ideas – so we should expect to know more closer to the election!”
Becky (Upper Sixth) said she found the session “important” and “informative” whilst fellow politics student, Thomas (Lower Sixth) reflected, “The meeting was very informative and provided a deep insight into the modern-day inner workings and beliefs of the Liberal Democrat party.”
The Beaconsfield constituency was created in 1974, and has always been a Conservative seat. The present MP is Joy Morrissey who has been an MP continuously since 12 December 2019 and currently holds the Government post of Assistant Whip.
In the recent local elections for Windsor and Maidenhead, one of our Old Leightonians, George Blundell (Class of 2018), recently unseated the Conservative party hold of 16 years by running as the Liberal Democrat candidate. An impressive achievement for someone who is only 22!
