All our new students arriving into Year 7 and 8 are welcomed into Fryer House, our school within a school. Students benefit from all the facilities Leighton Park has to offer but they also have their own building, its own area in our grounds, and with staff who specialise with this age group. Students can enjoy Fryer House during lunchtime and after their lessons. It is also home for our students who choose to board on a flexi, weekly or full time basis.

The first steps to the next level

Throughout Year 7 and 8, we encourage project-based learning, collaboration, critical thinking and creative problem solving. By weaving these qualities through our varied curriculum, we aim to give every child confidence in their abilities. This lays a strong foundation for their move to senior school in Year 9.
Curriculum

Friendships, responsibility and learning

Throughout their first year with us, your child will get great support from the older Year 8 mentors. This develops a strong sense of community and belonging, which they’ll feel throughout their time at the School. Kindness and happiness are prized.

Wrap-around care

Our wrap-around care means that students are welcome from 7.30am and can choose to stay until 7.30pm if they wish. It gives them the chance to try new activities and eat together with their friends – and all at no extra cost. And with 90 co-curricular hobbies available, including Prep Club, they’ll never be short of something to do.

Our Year 7s talk about their experience of joining Leighton Park
Take a look +

Our Year 7 students come from a number of primary and prep schools in the Reading area. Our comprehensive transition programme provides a number of opportunities to get to know their new school prior to joining. All new students are invited to our Newcomers’ Day the day before the start of term, so that they can get to know each other and start to become familiar with the Park. Our Fryer Camping experience on the first weekend of term is a wonderful way for our 60 new Fryer students to get to know each other and their Tutor team.

Remote learning

Our students have access to our Google Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), where they’ll be able to use our online learning resources, collaborate with each other, and complete assignments.

Our forward looking approach to learning technology helped us adapt very quickly during the lockdowns, and to support students who have had to isolate. During our evaluation of distance learning during lockdown in May 2020, 95% of families agreed or strongly agreed that the lesson provision in Google Classroom had been of excellent quality

"My child's experience has been outstanding. He has grown tremendously from a very shy, non-confident child who joined in Year 7 to a very confident young man who is leaving Leighton Park happy, content, satisfied, has been pushed academically, pushed with his sport and music - and has enjoyed every aspect of it."
