On Friday 22nd November, Leighton Park’s Amnesty students travelled to Shoreditch, London, to attend the Amnesty International Youth Conference 2024. The event brought together 80–100 students with the aim of inspiring young people to take action, understand their rights and recognise their role in driving meaningful change—values deeply rooted in the ethos of our School.
During the conference, our students enthusiastically participated in a debate on whether the voting age should be lowered. They passionately articulated their arguments and enjoyed engaging with peers from other schools to exchange views on critical contemporary issues. The day also included sessions on the refugee crisis, exploring effective ways to support those affected, alongside creative activities and thought-provoking icebreakers designed to inspire innovative thinking. A highlight of the day was the opportunity to experience live poetry, which left a lasting impression on attendees. They were also encouraged to craft poems of their very own!
Amnesty Co-Ordinator, Stephen Taynton, reflected “It was a great day out for the students and I think it was very worthwhile doing!”
Year 10 attendee, Chloe, also shared her experience: “I believe that the trip has allowed me to be more open minded. I have a more developed understanding of human rights as well as confidence to voice my opinions, even if not everybody agrees.”
