Saturday 17th January saw 16 runners from Leighton Park at the annual Berkshire Schools Cross Country Competition held at Newbury Showground. The energetic group participated across numerous competitions during the day and did an amazing job to get round the courses they had to tackle.
Ben (Year 11) enthused, “The slippery and muddy state of the course meant the race was very demanding, but through perseverance I managed to finish strong and fast. Overall, I found it challenging but I’m pleased with my result.”
In the first race of the day Charlie came 11th in the Year 7 girls’ race, which had almost 90 runners in it. The Year 7 boys were up next and our first boy home was Hudson in 36th followed by Dylan in 42nd and Xander in 51st place. In the Year 8 and 9 boys’ race there were over 100 competitors and as a team our boys finished 5th, which was a great achievement considering many boys have another yeargroup above them in this race. Raph (Year 8) was our first boy home in 19th place. In the Year 10 and 11 girls’ race Isla (Year 10) came 7th to secure a place at the regional event in Chelmsford to be held on the 31st January. Congratulations Isla!! In the year 10 and 11 boys’ race Ben (Year 11) finished in 19th place with William (Year , Jamie (Year and Kurtis (Year also running in what was a very competitive race. In the Senior Boys’ race Sam (Upper Sixth) finished in a very creditable 22nd place in a gruelling 6.5km race. Well done to all of the students that represented Leighton Park and we look forward to the ISA Competition coming up at the end of the month.
Director of Sport, Simon Bradbury commented: “I am particularly delighted for Isla who has just missed out over the last two years to finally get into the regional event. The Year 8 and 9 boys also showed great promise finishing 5th as a team and well done to Charlie in Year 7 for such a great finish to her Year 7 race.”
