Big Business for Mini Visitors

Upper Sixth students pursuing DT and Business Studies were lucky enough to gain a first-hand insight into some of their textbook learning through a visit the Mini/BMW factory in Cowley, Oxford on Friday 24th March.

They were able to observe car manufacturing in person, and to learn more about manufacturing and the car industry, directly linking to elements of the Upper Sixth theory on industrial manufacturing. “It’s a really important trip as it ties in with both their recent learning and also Paper 3 of the A Level which this year is based entirely on the automotive industry.” commented Sarah Owen, Business Studies teacher.

The plant, which is one of the old car plants in the world, was founded in 1913 and was the birthplace of the very first mini back in 1959. The students were able to witness the bodyshop where 1,200 robots weld or bond pressed steel panels and the final assembly halls where the finished mini comes together. There was a huge variety of cars on show as each mini is essentially bespoke since the buyer can specify their own ideal vehicle from the range of showroom options and extras.

The tour also focussed on improving the sustainability of the car manufacturing process with a huge solar energy plant the size of five football pitches on the roof as well as investments in energy usage, water consumption, CO2 emisssions and waste generation.

Karolina (Upper Sixth), was enthusiastic about the visit saying “One thing I enjoyed most about the tour was the opportunity to see first-hand how the BMW MINI Cooper is designed and manufactured. It was fascinating to learn about the different stages of production and the attention to detail that goes into each car. I was surprised by the level of technology and innovation involved in the manufacturing process. From the use of robots to the precision engineering of each component, it was clear that BMW is committed to staying at the forefront of automotive design and production. In terms of how this trip has benefitted my Sixth Form studies, it has provided me with valuable insights into the world of engineering and manufacturing. Seeing how concepts learned in the classroom are applied in real-world settings has helped me better understand the practical applications of what I am learning.”
