British Science Week Trip: A Flash, Bang, Wallop of a Day!

As part of Leighton Park’s celebration of British Science Week, students from our science-related co-curricular clubs, including STEAM Club, Steminists, and Fossil Rocks, embarked on a thrilling trip to the Science Museum in London. The day was packed with hands-on learning, awe-inspiring exhibits, and of course, a few scientific explosions along the way!

One of the highlights of the trip was the electrifying ‘Flash, Bang, Wallop’ show in the Wonderlab. The spectacle of loud bangs, bright flashes, and dramatic reactions had everyone on the edge of their seats. A special shoutout goes to one of our very own Steminists, who bravely stepped forward as a volunteer, fully immersing herself in the science-packed action!

For the older students, the Medicine exhibition provided a fascinating (and sometimes gruesome!) look at the history of medical advancements. From ancient surgical tools to modern-day breakthroughs, the exhibition took us on a journey through time, showcasing just how far medicine has come. Meanwhile, our aspiring engineers were captivated by the exhibition on flight. From early aviation attempts to cutting-edge space exploration, they were inspired by the incredible progress in aerodynamics and aircraft design. The interactive displays brought engineering concepts to life, leaving many students dreaming of designing the next generation of aircraft!

Jo Adey, Chair of the Parent and Staff Community (PSC) was pleased that the PSC were able to support the excursion, commenting: “The PSC were approached for funding to subsidise this science trip as part of the creation of a co-curricular science club, ‘The Steminists’, which aims to encourage girls in STEM subjects.  The parents loved that three Year 10 students, Alice, Eva and Daisy, were driving this initiative as their Global Perspective GCSE project to enhance community and address a global imbalance. In fact, the parents were so impressed, that the PSC offered additional funding so that a coach could be hired to enable more students to attend this great event where leading scientists will present ideas way beyond the normal school experience.”

Overall, the trip was a fantastic celebration of curiosity, discovery, and innovation. British Science Week has certainly ignited a spark in our young scientists, and we can’t wait to see what they explore next!
