IB | School Supported Self-Taught Language A

Subject Leader: Merion Taynton

Course overview:

School Supported Self-Taught Language A Literature is an independent course of study for students who want to pursue the study of literature in a language other than that which is offered at Leighton Park. This course can only be taken at Standard Level and over the two years of the programme. Taking this course will enable students to fulfil their Group 1 Studies in Language and Literature requirement as well as quality them for a bilingual diploma. This is an exciting opportunity for a student to deepen their understanding of their first and best language and challenge themselves as an independent learner. Being a self-taught student offers a unique opportunity to study the literature of a language that is not offered at our school as a taught subject. A certain level of autonomy is expected; you will be supported in developing a list of literary works that interest you but which also satisfy the requirements of the course. The required 150 hours of study for the course are satisfied through taught lessons in mixed language classes and independent study. Students will also be supported in finding a tutor in their chosen language to assist with their written work. The structure and assessments are the same as any taught Language A Literature course, in that you will also study texts in translation from around the world, consider global issues and explore literature through a variety of conceptual lenses.

Assessment consists of the following components:

An Individual Oral that consists of a 15-minute presentation, exploring two of the texts in relation to a global issue of the student’s choice.

Paper 1: Guided literary analysis on one text from a choice of two.

Paper 2: A Comparative Essay on two or more works studied.

There is a great deal of independence expected from students undertaking this course.
