On Saturday 21st September our A Level Psychology students were keen to support their Forensic Psychology education with a visit to the Reading Crown Courts.
Experiencing the justice system from a variety of viewpoints they had the opportunity to try a case as jurors in mock trials with real advocates and judges, as well as getting to tour the court cells and speak to organisations involved in the criminal justice system. These included restorative justice and victim support groups, as well as the CPS and Magistrate’s Association.
The excursion enabled students to experience first-hand, the aims of custodial sentencing and its psychological effects, following their A Level curriculum. Having the opportunity to develop their understanding around recidivism, behaviour modification in custody, anger management and restorative justice programmes, Lihi, who is studying International Baccalaureate Psychology, alongside her peers Emma and Adriana, said of the day, “It was really interesting to get an insight into how forensic science links in with the justice system as well as getting a foundation of the topic which we’ll be studying further on in the year.”
