Desert Island Discs with Nic

Nic in the Lower Sixth has shown that lockdown is a great opportunity to practise a skill, having taken on a new project in the form of a weekly podcast for the Leighton Park community.

Inspired by the well-known radio show that has been broadcast since 1942, Desert Island Disc with Nic is aimed at raising the community spirit, that is so central to the School, whilst we learn together remotely.

For its inaugural episode, Nic caught up with her CTEC Sport Teacher and enduring influence since beginning LP life in Fryer, Jez Belas, Director of Sport, PE and Wellness. From weddings to the world of sport marketing to karaoke contests, Nic finds out what music and literature is important to her guest with great anecdotes along the way.

Discussing the motivation behind her Leighton Park podcast, Nic shared “I love the Radio 4 version of Desert Island Discs. I think a person’s taste in music, and the stories around what they choose, give a real insight into their personality. The community feel that Leighton Park provides is so special, but in the current climate hard to achieve, so I thought I could try to keep the community spirit alive through this podcast.”

She continued, “In this first edition, I’m talking with Jez, Director of Sport. We could not meet up to do the interview of course, so instead we talked over a Google Meet and I recorded our conversation, then edited the music in afterwards. I would like to thank Jez for being the first interviewee, we now know much more about him, and his love of dancing!”

Jez followed “I really enjoyed being on Nic’s first podcast. It’s actually really hard to pick five songs that mean a lot to you. Nic made it really fun and took the conversation to areas I didn’t expect it to go! Well done Nic, look forward to listening back to it and more to come.”
