The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a national scheme for young people aged 14-24 which builds lifelong skills and friendships through adventurous challenges and personalised experiences. Offered at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels each award requires varying amounts of time spent developing skills, enhancing physical capabilities and volunteering, completing an expedition, and in the case of the Gold Award, independently undertaking a purposeful group residential trip.
At Leighton Park the Bronze DofE expedition training is available through our timetabled Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) lessons in Year 9 followed by Silver in Year 10 and Gold in the Sixth Form. The expeditions take place in the Year 9 Activity Week during term time for Bronze and the school holidays for Silver and Gold levels with appropriate training expeditions providing practice opportunities before the final assessments. The service, skills and physical elements can be completed within School through the extensive co-curricular programme which features over 90 choices and allows each student to create an individualised approach, indulging their own interests.
On Monday 24th March our latest group of successful students were celebrated in the Austin Lecture Theatre for their DofE Award achievements at a special presentation ceremony. Isaac Walker, our Outdoor Education Manager, reflected on the number of young people who begin the award, relative to those with the commitment and resilience to complete it. The procession of recipients across the stage collected their certificates and their DofE pins, which they can wear proudly as part of their Collect Dress. Congratulations everyone!
