Drawing Inspiration from Kew Gardens

Year 8 students enjoyed a fantastic art trip to Kew Gardens on Monday 23rd March. The day was filled with creativity, exploration, and inspiration drawn from both art and nature.

Students visited two fascinating exhibitions. At the Marianne North Gallery, they admired beautiful oil paintings depicting exotic landscapes and rare plant species from around the world. They also explored the vibrant mandalas of The Singh Twins, which tell powerful stories of global trade and colonialism through intricate patterns and bold colours.

The group then explored the iconic Palm House, where students took inspiration from the lush, humid environment filled with tropical plants and towering palms. This was followed by a walk high above the gardens along the Treetop Walkway, approximately 30 metres in the air, offering a unique perspective of the landscape in the cool spring air.

While immersed in nature, students created circular poems inspired by the sounds and sights around them, including glimpses of local parakeets. After lunch, they took part in a fun origami challenge, crafting paper parrots before heading to The Hive. This immersive outdoor installation highlights the essential role of bees in sustaining biodiversity.

Throughout the day, students reflected on their own impact on the environment and considered how they can contribute to protecting nature. It was a truly enriching experience, leaving everyone with fresh ideas and inspiration to bring back to the art studios at LP.
