Leighton Park is excited to announce that Richard Duckett, Assistant Head of Sixth Form and Head of Politics, has recently published a new book – ‘Jungle Warrior’.
The biography of Lieutenant Colonel Edgar Peacock covers the success that occurred in the jungles of Burma by the Special Operations Executive (SOE) created by Winston Churchill in 1940. Written for Peacock’s grandson, the book offers a deep dive into an often-overlooked chapter of history. It has not only created new opportunities for Richard, but has enriched the Leighton Park community.
Richard’s expertise doesn’t stop at the page, it integrates into his teaching. His work shows students that discipline, curiosity, and a passion for learning extend far beyond the classroom. As he encourages, “There is time to do other things if you make time to do things you enjoy. Make it happen, the places it can take you is amazing!”
Students who have shown great interest in his work have found ways to involve themselves in this historical knowledge through their own means and passions. A music student in Richard’s tutor group gladly recreated a lost Japanese propaganda piece after Richard discovered the musical scoring on an archival trip, while another student reached out to Japanese friends to translate the text.
Richard balances his scholarly pursuits with his role as an educator, saying, “I suppose everyone has their thing that they do to chill out and give themselves some headspace. I suppose that’s what it is really, diving into the history and you’re taken away to other places. It’s good for me. Diving into history is a way to escape and unwind, it’s a passion that keeps me at the top of my historical game.”
By continuing his work as a historian alongside his teaching, Richard not only deepens his own knowledge but also inspires students to do more of what they enjoy. Leighton Park is proud to support Richard’s passion, which continue to have a lasting impact on the school community.
