Fuel for Learning – Active Minds at Leighton Park

On Monday 12th January, Leighton Park School welcomed Year 5 pupils from Waverley Prep for an engaging and educational visit focused on the links between nutrition, energy, and physical activity. The day brought together expertise from Leighton Park’s Food Technology and Sports departments; Students explored the importance of fuelling their bodies, put their skills to the test with sporting challenges, and created their own healthy granola bars. Their teachers also enjoyed catching up with former students who are now at LP.

The visit offered a fun, informative, and active learning experience, helping pupils understand the important connection between healthy eating and an active lifestyle. The group was split in half, with one group beginning the day in Sport, while the other took part in Food Technology, before swapping over later in the morning.

In the Food Technology session, pupils were introduced to the facilities and guided through the preparation of a healthy, energy-boosting snack. Working practically in the kitchen, they learned skills in food preparation, and even did the washing up.

Meanwhile, the group taking part in sport enjoyed an interactive session exploring how the body uses energy during different types of exercise and daily activities. Through practical games and discussion, pupils discovered how nutrition plays a vital role in performance, stamina, and overall wellbeing. The session encouraged them to think about how the food they eat can directly affect how they feel and perform during physical activity. The session concluded with some healthy competition on the rowing machines!

The groups later swapped activities to ensure everyone experienced both elements of the workshop, before enjoying a delicious lunch & the juice bar in Oakview!

Waverley’s Year 5 teacher, Philly Hatton-Evans, said she brought her class to LP to “give the children a chance to learn different skills in a new environment by specialist teachers”. Reflecting on the session, she said “It was brilliant! I could clearly see that the pupils developed their knowledge throughout.” Sonia (Year 5) agreed saying “It was excellent!!! I really enjoyed playing on the ladder and trying the rowing machine as well” whilst Anya (Year 5) highlighted “everything was very fun especially the Food Tech”.  Evie (Year 5) added, if I was telling my friend about the day “I would say ‘this is the best place in the world.’”
