Gold at the Maths Olympiad

On Monday 2nd November, a number of students keen to stretch and test their ability, took part in the UK Mathematics Trusts’ Senior Maths Challenge. The 90-minute, multiple-choice competition that runs across the UK is designed to encourage mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency in using basic techniques to solve interesting problems.

Upper Sixth competitors Xinyi, Luke and Annie were recently delighted to discover that they had each received a Gold Award for their effort and skill in the paper, having all achieved a score of at least 91% or higher.

Annie in Upper Sixth commented, “I found the Senior Maths Challenge difficult, but it was really fun to work through the questions. I was really engaged by the style of questions and enjoyed working through them.”

Head of Mathematics, Mary Boyd, praised “Huge congratulations to each of you for your success in the recent UKMT Senior Mathematics Challenge!”

The cause for celebration follows Xinyi’s previous outstanding performance in the Girls’ Maths Olympiad that took place earlier this term, where she was commended by the Trust for being one of the participants to place highest in the country.

Graham Keniston Cooper, Chair of UK Mathematics Trust, applauded “Congratulations on your fantastic performance in the Maths Olympiad for Girls 2020! Your score of 42 points is one of the highest out of 2,327 participants that took part […] well done on this amazing achievement.”

An elated Mark Budge, Maths Teacher and Xinyi’s Tutor, commented “Many congratulations on this fantastic achievement. Adding this to your Girls’ Maths Olympiad, it shows what a wonderful mathematician you are – and will become!”

All three students are now looking forward to proceeding to the next round, the Senior Kangaroo, this Wednesday, 25th November.
