The Leighton Park astro was alive with energy and excitement as six primary schools came together for the KS2 Festival of Sport in Hockey on Thursday 6th March. Southcote, Redlands, Alfred Sutton, Katesgrove, Ridgeway, and Whitley Park Primaries competed in five heats before a nail biting final between Southcote and Alfred Sutton. With the score tied at full time, the match culminated in a dramatic penalty shootout, where Southcote emerged the winners.
The festival provided a fantastic opportunity for both primary school pupils and Leighton Park students. Sixth Form and Year 10 students took on leadership roles as umpires, supporting the younger players and sharing their passion for the sport. The students were selected as members of the Advanced Performance Programme (APP) and the sports scholars.
Natashia Coccia, Head of Partnerships, reflected on the significance of the event, saying, “Providing this opportunity for our sports leaders and partnership children is just so important to our values-led identity as a school. It was uplifting to say the least!”
Hermione, a Year 10 umpire and experienced hockey player, embraced the challenge of officiating: “I get to figure out how to umpire a match, which is nice… I love seeing people enjoy hockey, and it’s just an overall great experience because I get to share my love for hockey with them.”
Oli, an Upper Sixth umpire and GB hockey player, shared a similar sentiment: “It’s really nice that I can share my passion with younger kids, and hopefully, those who haven’t played hockey before might get interested, join a club, and start playing.
The festival embodied Leighton Park’s commitment to outreach and values-led education, encouraging leadership, inclusivity, and participation. Whether players were experiencing competitive hockey for the first time or officiating a match, the event was a celebration of sport, teamwork, and community spirit.
Hockey is a core sport at Leighton Park, together with football and netball, providing multiple opportunities for students to participate in team sports throughout the year. You can read more about our sports offering here – https://www.leightonpark.com/sport-and-wellness/
