The four Houses, Bentsi-Enchill, Cadbury, Fox and Tubman, faced their annual Dance and Drama challenge on Thursday 10th October as their original plays were premiered in Main Hall after only four weeks of preparation time.
Six esteemed judges from professional theatrical backgrounds were recruited by Head of Drama and Dance, Jessica Wittert van Hoogland, to assess the quality of the performances and the audience, made up of students, staff and a smattering of parents, were enthusiastic in their applause.
The 2024 challenge required the creation of an original play that retold or reimagined a Greek Myth or Legend revealing a moral or a lesson. Cadbury kicked off the action with ‘Pandora’s Rebirth’, followed by Fox House with ‘Medusa’, Tubman performed ‘Echoes of Narcissus’ and Bentsi-Enchill concluded the night with ‘The Myth of Orpehus & Eurydice’.
Guiding the House Clerks before the event, Jessica recommended keeping the story simple, relevant to a modern audience and the use of a Greek Chorus. The play also needed to include a minimum of two dances, one solo or duet dance that was completely integrated with the Drama element, and a group dance.
There were twelve awards on offer facilitating recognition for script, set design, choreography, dancing, acting and direction but the prize everyone had their sights set upon was the ‘Best Overall Production’ award!
Congratulations to Tubman, overall winners of the competition. Awarding the ‘Stage Door’ trophy the judges said “The direction, the choreography, all the elements came together beautifully, it was set, well executed and highly inventive, the script, the direction, everything; we all loved it, just loved it, no arguments at all!”
