The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course is a compulsory element of the internationally acclaimed International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. It teaches students to question how we know what we know by exploring different perspectives across the world’s cultures, challenging personal and ideological assumptions and developing critical thinking. Students must each write a 1,600 word essay and mount an exhibition to obtain a successful pass.
On Wednesday 10th October the Upper Sixth IB cohort presented their TOK exhibition to the School community in Peckover Hall. Each student selected three objects in response to their chosen question about knowledge, from a range of 35 different queries provided by the IB. Amongst the favoured options were ‘What role do experts play in influencing our consumption or acquisition of knowledge?’, ‘How can we know that current knowledge is an improvement upon past knowledge?’ and ‘How might the context in which knowledge is presented influence whether or not it is accepted or rejected?’
Saarvi (Upper Sixth) was enthusiastic about the experience, saying: “I really enjoyed this work because it helps you to connect TOK with your real life experiences. Here we got to engage personally and we get to explore how we have had TOK in our lives all along, even though it may not have been obvious.”
Kees Luteijn, Director of IB, commented: “Today is an opportunity for students to talk to parents, students and staff about why they chose their objects. It’s interesting to see how varied their choices are, everything from a recycling bin to a piece of music!”
