The JBH Speech Competition is unusually making a second appearance in the same calendar year with the next event scheduled to take place in only 10 days time!
The JBH combines prepared speeches on contentious subjects, challenging heckling from the floor and spontaneous, argumentative responses from the speakers, into a most entertaining evening. The prize is awarded to the contestant who delivers the best argument, demonstrates adept handling of hecklers and manages not be diverted, completing their delivery with aplomb. You are welcome to see the photos from March and to watch the video of the 2023 competition on our YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/JBH_2023.
All members of the Leighton Park community are warmly welcomed to join us in Main Hall on Wednesday 27th November at 7.00pm for the second competition of 2024.
This year we have six courageous speakers including Cali (Lower Sixth) who will be attempting to persuade us that ‘Euthanasia should be legalised in the UK for all over 18s’. Cali is enthusiastic but also anxious about her upcoming experience: “I am feeling extremely nervous about the competition, I don’t mind public speaking however the heckling part of it is terrifying me! Although I am super excited to push myself and I feel honoured to have the opportunity to take part in a competition that is such a historic part of LP!”
Kimia (Upper Sixth) returns to the stage for the second year with ‘As a society we should abolish feminism’: “I am feeling quite confident entering the competition at this stage,
because of how amazing and fun it was the last time and I wanted to relive that moment again. I have also learnt a lot about public speaking and debating since last year and want to put my new skills to the test.”
Kemi (Upper Sixth) who returns to defend her winning position will be arguing ‘Should Governments Pay Back Reparations for Slavery?’. Kemi enthused, “As the winner of last year’s JBH, last year was thrilling for me, as it enabled me to improve my public speaking overall and improve confidence within myself. This year, I have gone with the idea that the more controversial – the better!”
The other contestants are new to the competition and include Lower Sixth students, Louis on “Trump is the only way forward for America”, Zara on “The market in human organs should be legalised in the UK” and Antigoni with “Animal Testing is justified for the improvement of Medicine”.
