Jumping Ahead: The UKMT Junior Maths Kangaroo

Our keen mathematicians had another opportunity to practise their craft today as the UK Maths Trust held their follow-on round to the Junior Maths Challenge: the Junior Maths Kangaroo. The competition is a 60-minute, multiple-choice maths challenge consisting of 25 problems. It is so named in recognition of the contribution made by Australia to establishing large-scale mathematics contests.

6 of our students in either Year 7 or 8 were invited to participate based on the qualifying score of 88.

The challenge offers capable students high-quality problems designed to encourage mathematical thinking. They are scored with 5 marks awarded for each correct answer to questions 1 – 15 and 6 marks are awarded for each correct answer to questions 16 – 25. Unlike the senior maths challenges students do not lose any markes for getting questions wrong.

The top-scoring 25% of participants each receive a Certificate of Merit. Each participant below this threshold receives a Certificate of Qualification or Participation. We look forward to receiving this year’s results later in the summer and presenting the certificates in Collect.
