Over the weekend, an adventurous and committed group of students have been hiking the Brecon Beacons, as they work towards their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards.
“It is fantastic to see so many students involved in what is Leighton Park’s largest Gold Award cohort to date. This award is deliberately designed to promote student responsibility.” enthused Outdoor Education and DofE Manager, Isaac Walker, upon the Lower Sixth’s return from the mountains on Sunday 20th November.
Isaac continued, “This trip has been a vital part of the expedition process. During the day, students worked with qualified mountain leaders to hone their navigation and expedition skills. In the evenings at Dolygaer Lodge, they got involved in further sessions, taking the opportunity to explore options for their assessed expedition.”
Charlotte reported back, “We had a great time! Despite some very windy, rainy and cold Welsh weather, we never stopped having a laugh and a good time. We reached the summits of the three highest mountains in South Wales in one day which was certainly a highlight! Cooking in our groups in the evening and morning brought us together even more as a team as we prepared meals for all 30 of us.”
The group now look forward to taking on mid Wales in May, before they complete their DofE assessment in the Autumn.
