The Junior Drama Production of ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ featuring students in Years 7, 8 and 9 opened to a rapt audience on Thursday 27th March. The production, directed by Drama teacher, Lauren Brandwood, was an absolute triumph with superb storytelling, set and costume design.
Lauren explained, ‘We started in September but we only do two rehearsals a week so we don’t have lots of time but it’s been nice because we have had time to form a community and get to know each other. We have come up with lots of creative ideas together along our journey. I’d encourage everyone to join Quercus: don’t be afraid, drama is for everyone. No matter what role you want. We have people who are in tech crew who aren’t on the stage, we have others who are on stage but don’t have any lines involved in the ensemble, we have people that want a main part. It gives you skills that you can use in all aspects of your life in and outside school, it grows your confidence and you can make friends with different year groups.”
Max (Year 9), who plays Peter, reflected “The journey has gone quite quickly to be honest, at the beginning we were unprepared, we didn’t know, but now it’s show day I feel pumped up and ready to go! I can’t wait to get on stage again! I didn’t do it last year so I’ve made some new friends, especially people that I’m in scenes with. Definitely do it if you are thinking to get involved with Quercus. You’ll gain new friends, you’ll gain more confidence on stage, and you’ll have a really great time as well.”
Isi (Year 9) who plays Aslan, added “At first no-one had any acting in their characters but now suddenly everyone just is their characters; it’s all come together. There are lots of new Year 7s because obviously they’ve just joined the school. It’s nice to get to know people in other years, otherwise we might not get to talk to them or be associated with one another. If you are thinking about joining Quercus I’d say, be confident in yourself, that’s the most important thing, if you trust yourself you’ll get to do whatever you want.”
This enchanting stage adaptation of C.S. Lewis’s classic novel follows the journey of four siblings—Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie—who are evacuated from war-torn London to the countryside during World War II. While exploring their new home, Lucy stumbles upon a magical wardrobe that serves as a gateway to the mystical land of Narnia. Narnia is under the icy rule of the White Witch, who has cast the land into perpetual winter. As the Pevensie children venture further into this intriguing world, they join forces with the noble lion, Aslan, and an array of fantastical creatures to challenge the Witch’s reign. Along the way, Edmund falls under the Witch’s spell, causing conflict within the group, but ultimately, love, bravery, and sacrifice prevail. A story of adventure, betrayal, redemption, and courage, Adrian Mitchell’s dramatisation brings the magic of Narnia to life, capturing the timeless battle between good and evil in a visually stunning and emotionally gripping production.
