Lower Sixth in New York: Exploring the Big Apple

Leighton Park’s Lower Sixth students embarked on a thrilling journey to New York on 11th February to start their half term in the Big Apple!

Despite the long flight, excitement filled the cabin as they anticipated their adventures. Upon arrival, they set about navigating the bright lights and enjoying the exciting atmosphere with dinner at the Margaritaville Restaurant in Times Square. The tropical-themed buffet was full of tasty bites, from burgers to grilled sandwiches and ribs to grilled seafood; the students definitely didn’t go hungry. Finishing their first day with an incredible view, the group climbed to the Top of the Rock, observing the New York skyline in awe.

Waking up with energy and excitement for another day in the big city, day two started with a boat trip around New York harbour to admire the fabulous Statue of Liberty. Wrapped up warm on the boat, the next stop was Ellis Island for a history lesson at its Museum of the Historic Immigration Station before moving on to the next adventure by travelling on the subway.

With lots of sightseeing along the way, the first visit was the 9/11 memorial, Ground Zero. Brooklyn Bridge was also a highlight for many as they visited the famous (and very busy) bridge. The rush of the city was an exhilarating experience and to top it all off, dinner at Ellen’s Diner was up next. The 50s-themed diner was filled with memorabilia, singing servers, and an extensive menu of American classics.

Day three proved a favourite with many of the students with the extra treat of waking up to snow! The icy flakes provided a great photo opportunity to start the day with some very photogenic scenery. Seeing some very famous movie and television show sets, stepping into the world of many favourites including ‘Ghostbusters’, ‘The Devil Wears Prada’, ‘Avengers Assemble’ and ‘Friends’ was a treat for movie buffs. Stopping off for lunch near the Empire State Building was a very surreal experience and the fun didn’t stop there: next up was shopping at Macy’s, the biggest shop in the city.

Ending another busy day of walking, exploring and sightseeing, the group landed at the Hard Rock Cafe for dinner. With so much choice on offer with real American treats, students’ and staff’s bellies couldn’t have been fuller! With the last treat for day 3, they hurried along to Broadway to see the fantastic ‘Back to the Future’ musical production and were absolutely mesmerised by the singing, dancing and everything in between.

With an early rise for check out on the final day, exploring the city one last time started with a trip to Trump Tower and window shopping on 5th Avenue. Then to snowy Central Park before heading to the Museum of Modern Art to see masterpieces by artists such as Picasso, Monet, Pollock, Warhol and Miro. It really was a spectacular trip enjoyed by all.
