On Wednesday 9th August our keen members of the LP Woolpack Merion Taynton, Head of Year 9, and Greta Leighton, Maths teacher, kindly supported by Merion’s husband, Stephen, delivered a bounty of knitted items and wool to Whitley Community Development Association (WCDA).
There was a range of cosy blankets and adorable baby clothes, many of which were knitted by a friend of Merion’s mother, Joyce Goodall, who is 93 years old! The blankets were mostly sewn together by Greta from squares knitted by Merion and members of the staff Knit and Natter group. The baby items will go from Whitley to the maternity unit at the hospital and the blankets will go to wherever there is need: there was a variety of sizes from a single bed blankets to lap blankets.
The generous donation of wool and of knitting kits came mostly from parent, Claire Pawley and Alumni Relations Co-Ordinator, Penny Wellington. These were enthusiastically welcomed by the Whitley CDA Knit and Natter group that meets on a Wednesday to socialise and to get creative with crochet hooks and knitting needles.
Merion commented, “The members of Whitley CDA’s own knit and natter group were absolutely delighted with the yarn donations, along with some extra crochet hooks, and will enjoy using it to knit and crochet their own items. They were such a lovely friendly group and we stopped to chat for a while.”
The Leighton Park knit and natter group meets one lunchtime a week during term time and is bolstered by members of the Facebook group, LP Woolpack, which is open to parents, guardians and Old Leightonians who can all get involved in knitting for charity.
