The highly-anticipated House Music competition is a fun evening of high energy, spectacular performances, and lively community spirit! This annual event features our four Houses, Bentsi-Enchill, Cadbury, Fox and Tubman, this year submitting their best and boldest students for the categories of Junior Soloist, Senior Soloist, Original Composition, Small Ensemble and Large Ensemble.
The evening’s judges had a range of talent and experience, with our Head, Luke Walters, eager to oversee his first House Music! Alongside him were OL Mike Maclennan, an award-nominated composer for film and TV; Vasilis Xenopoulos, a renowned saxophonist; Álua Nascimento, an award-winning percussionist; Chris Mitchell, an award-winning composer; and Rebecca Jones, an accomplished violinist and pianist.
There were so many incredible highlights from the evening. Henry (Year 7) started the night with a bang performing Metallica’s ‘Master of Puppets’ on the drums for Cadbury; Tubman delivered a great blend of acoustic guitar and music tech in their original composition, ‘Inflorescence’; Bensti-Enchill’s small ensemble of ‘Purple Rain’ got the whole crowd moving; and Fox ended the night with a spectacular, and very pink, large ensemble tribute to Chappell Roan.
It was a dazzling night with such a variety of performances from all our students, but the overall winner for House Music 2026 was Bentsi-Enhcill, continuing their victory from last year!
Reflecting on his first experience of this event, our Head Luke had to say: “What an amazing evening! It’s just such a pleasure to see so many young people enjoy music. There was such a variety and range, the choreography was amazing as were the performances. It was just an outstanding event all around!”
Imogen Cook, History Teacher and Bentsi-Enchill’s House Clerk, was ecstatic: “I’m so proud of everyone from every House in every category. It’s a real morale booster for our House having won, but it’s so amazing how it brings everyone in the community together”. A member of the house, Mikayla (Year 10), was just as enthusiastic: “I found tonight amazing! It was my fourth year in a row doing it and I had so much fun, especially with winning! I think everyone had so much fun, I saw so many smiles on each and everyone’s faces. It’s an event everyone looks forward to, everyone preps for such a long time and it’s so worth it in the end!”
Our Director of Music and Media, Rosemary Scales reflected: “I never cease to be amazed by the sense of community, not to mention the wonderful musical performances, that this event always manages to conjure up. The House spirit on display is fantastic, with students supporting one another and celebrating each performance, regardless of House”
