Maths Feast 2023!

Leighton Park entered two teams of four students each into Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP) regional Maths Feast competition for Year 10s on Friday 24th March hosted by Edgbarrow School in Crowthorne. The eight students competed against 14 other teams from 7 other schools and tackled four rounds of mathematical puzzles in various formats. Both teams scored well with one team gaining second place in one of the rounds.

“This is a national competition which combines mathematical, communication and teamwork skills and offers students the chance to develop their enjoyment of mathematics.” explained Duncan Laurie-Pile, Maths teacher and trip co-ordinator. “It was an invigorating experience and an opportunity for them to apply some of the many new mathematical skills they have acquired this year.  Time pressure was a constant presence and spurred on some excellent creative thinking and task distribution strategies.”

Cem (Lower Sixth) who studies A Level Maths and Futher Maths and who accompanied the group, commented, “In my opinion, this competition is quite important for students that want to study A Level Maths and Further Maths. These lessons require not only a good foundation in Maths but also the ability to use different areas of Maths and solve problems using different creative approaches. This competition encourages students to solve difficult problems in creative ways and utilise the skills they learned in their lessons. Overall, I think this was a good opportunity for them to have fun and find new problems that they can solve with the skills they have learned. It was a pleasure to be a part of it.”
