On Thursday 7th November a number of our mathematically minded students attended the UKMT’s Individual Senior Maths Challenge, four of whom then secured a place in the next round, the Kangaroo! As well as a strong set of results from the Sixth Form, particular merit went to David and Teresa (Year 11) and Chen (Year 10) who all achieved medals in what is considered a Sixth Form competition.
Eager for more of the action, some students returned to represent Leighton Park in the team event on Wednesday 20th November at Highdown School. Maths Teacher, Mark Budge remarked “Continuing with Leighton Park’s ongoing success in maths, the senior maths team delivered another strong performance in the recent regional Senior Maths competition.”
He continued “Personally, doing well in the Maths Competition is always welcome, but the most notable achievement for this group has been how the 16 students involved in the Senior Maths Club (from whom this team was drawn) have collaborated together to solve problems and had fun doing it. This is the highest number we have ever had and the increase in female students (nine in total) is particularly notable.”
Lower Sixth student Annie said “I found the competition challenging, but very enjoyable, as everyone kept a positive attitude throughout and we left the competition with smiles on our faces.” Earlier this term, Annie was awarded a distinction in the Mathematical Olympiad for Girls, in which our top female mathematicians attempted five maths problems in two and a half hours!
To finish off the term, students applied their knowledge to real-world, contemporary topics, at Maths in Action, held at the University of Warwick on Tuesday 3rd December. The day featured lively and enriching sessions from award-winning, world class speakers and industry professionals.
Nuna in the Lower Sixth commented “The event really inspired me and introduced me to interesting applications of math in the world, for example how different areas of math link, like juggling and the cosmos.”
