A classic component of school studies, Othello, is one of Shakespeare’s most enduring tragedies. On Thursday 12th January, students were able to glimpse an ‘extraordinary new vision’ for the play which explores themes such as racial prejudice and jealously at The National Theatre. Directed by Clint Dyer, this landmark production marks the first time the play has been staged by a black director.
Drama Teacher, Natasha Coccia, commented “Leighton Park students are so lucky to have access to world class theatre in London, and Thursday’s visionary production at the National did not disappoint. This production was fit for a contemporary audience, exploring themes of race, domestic abuse, oppression, and the impact of media spin in the digital age.”
Natasha continued, “For A Level Drama and Theatre studies students, it was a masterclass in direction. By the end of Act 5, we were all completely mesmerised by the stunning performance given by Tanya Franks who plays the abused and stifled Emilia. We simply couldn’t stop talking about this provocative and engaging production on the way back to Reading! Five stars!”
