On Friday 11th October, Leighton Park held our first House sporting competition of this academic year, featuring the much-anticipated annual cross-country event. Students from all year groups, along with staff members, took part in an exciting day filled with friendly competition, friendly rivalry and vibrant house spirit.
The Year 7 and 8s kicked off the event with a colourful twist on their race, following tradition from previous years; Rather than donning their House colours, they arrived in plain white t-shirts, ready for a fun and vibrant colour run. The Fryers raced across the nearly 2km course while being doused in brightly coloured powdered paint thrown enthusiastically by our Sixth Form students and adding an extra layer of fun to the competition.
Following the Fryers, the Juniors (Years 9 and 10) tackled the slightly longer course, covering 3km. The competition among them was fierce, as they raced to earn points for their respective Houses. The day concluded with the Seniors (Years 11, Lower and Upper Sixth) and staff members challenging themselves with the longest race of the day, a 4.2km run that tested both endurance and determination.
As always, participation is key, with every student the School contributing points to their respective House, and extra points awarded to those who finished in podium positions. The House cross-country event is more than just a competition; it exemplifies the sense of community and belonging at Leighton Park, as the atmosphere is always one of encouragement and school spirit. Simon Bradbury (Director of Sport) explains “The House Cross-country event is nice because it is a whole school event where everyone takes part – everyone can do it so they see the value whether you want to run, skip or walk. Lots of students choose to run together and they experience first-hand that exercise can be fun and done with friends. It’s also really nice to see them encouraging one another on the way round. A great event to start with!”
Congratulations to everyone who took part! A special mention to Cadbury for winning the Fryer competition, Bentsi-Enchill for winning the Juniors and Tubman for winning the Seniors. After tallying the scores and participants, a tie emerged for the first time in 11 years, with Bentsi-Enchill and Tubman being crowned joint winners.
