Rocking and Recording at Rockfield Studios

Over the weekend beginning Friday 14th March, our A Level Music Technology students experienced the wonders of Rockfield Music Studios! The weekend was nothing short of extraordinary, offering a unique hands-on experience in one of the most iconic music studios in the world.

This was not just a visit to observe, but a chance to actively engage in the studio’s creative process. Students were hands-on, working as musicians and engineers, guided by masterclasses from leading professionals. The students enjoyed an astonishing five masterclasses and two evening studio recording sessions, allowing them to create covers and record their own compositions!

In this career-shaping experience, the cohort had access to top-end, vintage studio equipment, including Leslie cabinets, a Rhodes electric piano, classic ribbon mics, and even a sub-bass drum mic made from an old speaker, experiencing the same tools that shaped legendary records.

Head of Music Technology and Sound at Leighton Park, Dan Fisher Wienesen, expressed: “This was more than just a trip, this was a deep dive into real sound engineering. Students didn’t just learn about recording techniques, they lived them, standing where The Beatles and Queen once stood, experimenting with the iconic reverb chambers, and feeling the power of authentic, hands-on music production. The historic Coach House became their creative playground, where they took full control of the recording process. And of course, the homemade dinners and desserts were the perfect touch.”

Music Technology student, Kemianna (Upper Sixth), commented: “Going to Rockfield and following the paths of greats such as Coldplay, Oasis and Queen was an enlightening experience! I learnt so much that I can now apply to my A-Level Music Technology course. It was also amazing to work with not only amazing technicians, but my talented classmates, and to now be able to listen back to the brilliant tracks and covers that we recorded!”.

This visit to Rockfield Studios provided the students with invaluable insights into the world of professional music production and sound engineering, offering them the opportunity to develop skills that will shape their future careers in the music industry. View the trip photos here.
