Head of Politics, Global Perspectives and History teacher, Richard Duckett, has recruited a merry band of enthusiastic shoe shiners and set up a fundraising stand to support humanitarian aid in Ukraine. Based in the Oakview foyer the shoe shine is perfectly situated to capture those with less than perfect footwear as they exit from breakfast. With plenty of willing volunteers ready with brushes and polish it’s a quick job to go from scruffy to smart for only a £2 donation.
“I normally clean my shoes every day but today I didn’t because I wanted to contribute to the Ukraine.” commented Francesco (Year 10) as he arrived at the shoe shine station.
Satisfied customer, Sian (Lower Sixth), described her finished shiny footwear as “Brilliant!.” She continued “I do clean my shoes sometimes, usually about once a year, and they really needed doing so this has been great!”
Richard was inspired by the Collect on the Ukraine last week and sitting in Main Hall looking around at everyone’s feet realised there was an opportunity to raise money right there! “The trickiest pair so far has been a staff member’s pair of long knee-high boots but they donated a lot more than the obligatory £2 so it was definitely worth it. A lot of people are choosing to over-pay which is a lovely gesture. We raised £30 yesterday and about the same today.”
This is not Richard’s first foray into innovative fundraising activities. In 2021 he championed Duckett’s Beard, growing his facial hair for homelessness support charity, Launchpad, and encouraging donations by styling it as a pirate, a wizard, a rainbow, santa claus, a castaway and even Forrest Gump!
