Our new Diversity and Inclusion Officer, Shaun Dellenty, was the driving force behind the school’s participation in Wear Red Day 21 on Friday 22nd October. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of Show Racism the Red Card, the charity is dedicated to eradicating racial prejudice. The annual Wear Red Day offers a chance for people to show their support for this worthwhile cause and encourage discussion about race. Students were told in advance that staff would be wearing red and that they were welcome to initiate conversations about race.
The Show Racism the Red Card organisation used the hastag #WRD21 asking participant to tweet between 10am and 12pm with the aim of achieving a Twitter storm and creating a digital symbol of positivity and inclusivity through social media. Our staff were adorned in various shades of crimson, scarlet, burgundy and poppy red for their social media photos creating a bright and cheerful beacon of hope against the darkness of bigoted behaviours.
“The day is about raising awareness and getting students talking about it. It’s a visible commitment to the anti-racism message.” said Shaun.
