A sensational medley of music from some of the most popular movies and musicals delighted an enthusiastic audience on Wednesday 25th March. The Main Hall was filled from 7.00pm with the sounds of large and small ensembles performing popular pieces ranging from the 1964 classic ‘A Shot in the Dark’ from Pink Panther and the 1965 theme from ‘Thunderbirds’ to the modern ‘Londonderry Air’ from The Eight Hundred (2020) and the 2016 La La Land. Some of the favourites being performed were from Toy Story, Pitch Perfect, Aladdin and Lord of the Rings – a real mix of pieces across genres presented by our talented musicians with accomplished skill.
The orchestra and senior choir, two of our largest ensembles, were pleased to showcase their pieces on an impressive scale with students from all year groups and a handful of staff appearing on stage, whilst smaller groups, such as the vocal trio and Year 7 Duo, were equally well received by the audience.
The evening concert was followed up on Thursday 26th March with a relaxed lunchtime piano performance in the MMC Upper Foyer offering a pleasant and enjoyable post-prandial session for those audience members keen to welcome a musical respite into the busy-ness of the end of term.
Music is a real strength of Leighton Park with over 60% of our students learning at least one instrument with one of our 27 peripatetic music teachers. The department has been nominated two years running for ‘Outstanding Music Department of the Year’ and there are plentiful performance opportunities for musicians of all abilities in our concert series which includes lunchtime shows, a biannual musical, a biannual international music tour and regular themed evening events.
