On Tuesday 18th June, Leighton Park School hosted an Inclusive Festival of Sport.
The event has seen remarkable growth compared to this time last year, with 7 schools and a total of 16 teams in attendance this year. The schools participating were Wemms Education Centre, Moon Hall School, St James’ Boys, St Mary’s Gerrards Cross, LVS Ascot, Addington, and of course our own LP students. Pupils from these schools competed in a variety of inclusive games, many of which are featured in the Paralympics. These games included Goalball, Boccia, Seated Volleyball, and Walking Football.
Our Inclusive Festival of Sport was organised in partnership with the Independent Schools Association (ISA) and Power2Inspire, a charity founded by John Willis. Power2Inspire aims to ensure that all students feel included and that no one is left out, inspired by their founder’s experience of not being allowed to join in sport with his friends when he was younger; Power2Inspire is committed to creating sporting opportunities for all and enabling everyone to play sport together. The festival provided a welcoming, fun environment for all abilities, disabilities and backgrounds to play a sport they enjoy in an inclusive way, or to try something new.
Each team was distinguished by different coloured t-shirts, adding to the sense of team spirit and camaraderie. According to Simon Bradbury, Director of Sport, this year we introduced a new element by keeping scores for each match, which added an exciting competitive edge. Consequently, we were able to crown an overall winner, which was the Royal Blue team from St James’ Boys.
The event was expertly led by our Year 10 Sports leaders and Year 12 CTECH Sport students, along with support from some senior prefects. These students played a crucial role, with some organising and running the matches, while others were actively involved as part of the 16 teams.
The Inclusive Festival of Sport continues to grow as a platform for promoting inclusivity and sportsmanship among students.
