Leighton Park’s Sport Scholars enjoyed an inspiring morning at Go Perform, where they took part in two specialist seminars designed to deepen their understanding of training, teamwork, and recovery.
The first session, led by Dan Buchanan (Sport Rehabilitator & Soft Tissue Therapist), explored the dynamics of effective teams. Dan highlighted what makes teams succeed or fail, drawing on examples from professional sport, before linking the discussion back to the Scholars’ own Advanced Performer Programme (APP). He encouraged students to view APP as their own support team, built to help them lift one another and strive for success.
In the second seminar, Physiotherapist Sarah Holmes guided students through the stages of training, from learning to move correctly to achieving peak performance. She stressed the importance of monitoring training loads across physical, mental, and emotional levels, as well as recognising the signs of overtraining. Sarah also reinforced the crucial role of recovery in sustainable athletic development.
During their visit, the Scholars bumped into professional footballer, Tom Holmes, a former Reading FC player now with Rotherham United! The students rounded off the experience with a group photo alongside him.
Simon Bradbury, Director of Sport, noted the value of termly seminars at Go Perform, highlighting: “The students really value their termly sessions at Go Perform, and these seminars help the students from a theoretical standpoint by being able to apply this knowledge into their training. The exercises the students complete at Go Perform are shared with staff at LP so that they can work on these areas in their 1-2-1 and APP sessions.”
