Springtime Sporting Success

It has been a busy week in sport for our students competing in a wide variety of competitive fixtures between Saturday 14th and Friday 20th March.

Top cross-country athlete, Isla (Year 10), kicked off the achievements in the National Schools Cross Country race in Liverpool on 14th March where she joined the Berkshire squad to take on cross country runners nationwide. Isla’s commitment to training and her peak fitness shone though as she started in the Intermediate class race as the 7th runner and finished 4th! Overall Berkshire came 26th in the competition and Isla personally finished 190th out of 340 girls. The national competition follows the regional heats in February when Leighton Park secured both the U12 Girls’ and the U16 Boys’ team races and the original race in Newbury in January.

Later this week our Netball C Team were delighted to be crowned joint winners of the SOCs U18s Berkshire League ahead of Reading Blue Coat, Shiplake College, Reddam House, LVS Ascot and The Oratory School. The team celebrated their victories over the season having been undefeated throughout the term.

The U14s Team and the U18s C Team also played in a local tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. Coach, Tam, commented: “Great netball from the U18 Cs today and third place behind the two teams we lost to is a reward for their hard work and this whole season. They have been a great group to be with, they’ve all improved, they’re keen to learn, they’ve taken responsibility and they’re always positive, curious and ridiculously polite! The teamwork and support they show each other is just wonderful and it’s been a joy being with them this term. Coach’s Player of the Match today go to Alice (her defence has improved so much this term and she reads the game really well, getting front position and stealing so many clean interceptions) and Daisy (her confidence with shooting, her positioning and her accuracy have all improved massively this term).”

The House competitions in football and netball have dominated the games sessions for both boys and girls through the week with senior netball, junior football, junior netball and fryer netball all completed. Next week’s House sport includes House table tennis and senior football tournaments. We look forward to finding out the scores in Final Collect at the end of term!
