Swan Lake: Strength and Beauty

“The idea of a male swan makes complete sense to me. The strength, the beauty, the enormous wingspan of these creatures suggests to the musculature of a male dancer more readily than a ballerina in her white tutu.” Sir Matthew Bourne, Artistic Director of the New Adventures dance-theatre company.

This made complete sense to Leighton Park’s dance students too, as they visitied Sadler’s Wells, London, last night to see Matthew Bourne’s famous interpretation of ‘Swan Lake’. Beth Butler, Dance Teacher, commented “It was a wonderful opportunity to watch a piece of dance created by an extremely successful British practitioner.  His choreographic skill has achieved considerable international recognition and by the end of the evening students understood why.”

With a reputation for taking traditional ballet and twisting it into exciting new formats, New Adventures has been producing unique and iconic theatrical dance performances for over 30 years. With Matthew Bourne’s ‘Swan Lake’ premiering in 1995, the ballet has lost none of its power to surprise, delight and absorb audiences over the last few decades.

“It was extraordinary” commented Jocelyn and Harriet, as Teigan (also Year 8) added, “A wonderful experience”. Adi and Bella (Year 9) agreed: “It was a new and different experience and we loved every bit. The dances were amazing with unique choreography.” “I’m really glad I went!” concluded Charlotte (Year 7).

We look forward to more dance trips in future as the dance programme for GCSE and within our extensive co-curricular programme continues to build on the success of our new dance teacher, Beth, and the new dance studio, opened last September.
