The Demon Barber of Fleet Street Returns!

In 2016, students of Leighton Park served up an unforgettable performance of Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd; a story that explores morality and human decency. This Halloween, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street is set to return to the School, to be performed by the multi-award-winning Sainsbury Singers.

Set in a landscape of fear and shadows, the musical follows a life of uncertainty and hardship in 1940s London. Arriving in the city after 15 years of unjust exile, the eponymous barber intends to extract revenge on the judge who ruined his life. As Sweeney Todd carries out his vengeance, his resourceful landlady, Mrs Lovett, stumbles upon an ingredient that may just turn around the fortunes of her failing pie shop.

Show tickets for ‘Sweeney Todd; The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’ are now on sale with performances running from Tuesday 29th October – Saturday 2nd November, beginning at 7.30pm in the Main Hall. Please see further details below.

The reprise by the Sainsbury Singers will not only welcome a new cast, but use of the new Michael Malnick Centre’s state of the art music and media facilities. Since 2016, where the student film crew worked with professional recording equipment and technology provided by Holdan and Altered Images, Leighton Park has invested in providing the very best amenities for the performing arts, under its own roof.

Opened in March of this year the Music and Media Centre, designed by NVB architects, houses three stunning new music classrooms, seven additional music practice rooms, a Yamaha Live Lounge recording studio and a digital media studio. The digital media studio acts as a base for the School’s BTEC in Digital Media Production as well as several related co-curricular hobbies, including the Film, TV and Animation club.

The School’s commitment to media and film dates back nearly a century, with David Lean, an Oscar-winning Film Director, attending Leighton Park in the 1920s. Today, the School works in partnership with Pinewood Studios to ensure its teaching is in step with the requirements of industry.

Drama and Music are major parts of co-curricular life at Leighton Park and students of all ages and abilities can get involved. The School is renowned for the quality of its productions, that not only entertain but build students’ character, participation in the community and sense of achievement. Auditions for the School’s up and coming production, Chicago, begin next month, with the highly anticipated cast to be announced on 13th September.

If you cannot wait to see the Sainsbury Singers piece together this tragic and blood thirsty tale of love, murder and revenge; you can revisit the rank streets of Victorian London, where Leighton Park’s finest acting brought the demon barber’s vendetta to life, check out our Flickr gallery of the production.
