The Jorge Hortal Award

Of all the Leavers’ Awards presented at Leighton Park, the Jorge Hortal Award brings the greatest frisson of anticipation in  the Hall. No financial incentive but the accolade of being the ultimate “all rounder”.

Jorge joined Leighton Park in Fryer House, barely able to speak English; his older brothers were in the senior Houses. He threw himself into life at LP with gusto; an extraordinarily talented musician and sportsman, he excelled academically and was everyone’s friend. The future looked very bright, as he studied at the University of London. Tragically, Jorge died from a sudden illness, leaving his friends and family, and the LP community, bereft.

In 2000, the Jorge Hortal Award was established to honour a member of the Upper Sixth who have embodied Jorge’s zest for life, his willingness to be a team player, and his all round excellence.  Jorge’s family and some of his friends return every year for the Award presentation, including for some a trip from Madrid.

A film has been created to give a glimpse into the very special honour.
