On Thursday 14th December, Leighton Park’s Tubman House was pleased to hand over a cheque of £498 to Home-Start Reading after all the incredible fundraising efforts directed by Tubman students and staff over the 2023 academic year.
Home-Start Reading is a local charity that offers gentle, non-judgmental support and practical help to struggling parents. They support families through home visits, family groups, ‘Mums in Mind’ groups and ‘Journey to Parenthood’ groups, all of which are funded by donations and fundraising. Home-Start looks at the needs of each family and is able to assist with many activities from providing clothing and carpets to helping families in need enjoy quality time together. Volunteers from Home-Start, Sue and Catherine, who visited Leighton Park to meet the Tubman team expressed their gratitude commenting: “A huge thank you to everyone who donated to our charity; we appreciate it so much. This isn’t the first time we have received a donation from Leighton Park and we just enjoy working with these young people so much”.
Tubman House Charity Leads, Erin and Jocelyn (Upper Sixth) took the initiative to organise and run the fundraising events, drawing inspiration from their personal passions for the community and channelling the Quaker Values deeply ingrained in the School community. Leighton Park is dedicated to furthering our students’ personal growth through the House system’s charitable activities, enabling them to contribute towards making the world a better place.
The collective efforts of the students and staff underscore the commitment of Leighton Park to instil empathy and community action into pupils. Every member of the LP community, both staff and students, belongs to one of the four Houses which exist to bring people together for charitable, community and competition purposes.
