On Tuesday 8th November, the Music Department ventured into town for an evening at the Hexagon Theatre, after securing tickets to see the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with Violinist, Jennifer Pike.
Performed on the evening, Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of the violin repertoire, from its unusual opening with the soloist entering first, through to its sparkling Allegro finale!
Director of Music, Rosemary Scales, reflected “We loved it! For all musicians, the opportunity to hear a world class orchestra and soloist perform without having to travel into London was one not to be missed. For those students studying, or hoping to study, A Level Music, both Má Vlast: ‘Vltava’ (The Moldau) and Dvorak’s Symphony No.7 significantly supported the specification covered at this level.”
Feeling inspired, the following evening, 38 talented soloists took to the stage of Main Hall to deliver an impressive array of performances in the classical to the contemporary, for this term’s Soloists’ Concert.
The evening’s programme consisted of pieces on the trumpet, violin, cello, bassoon, guitar, piano, clarinet, drums, saxophone, oboe and trombone. Amongst the musicians, Alana and Leo (Year 9), Connie and Finn (Upper Sixth), each individually performed their own compositions to much applause.
The following week it was the turn of our Small Ensembles to share their musical talents. Amongst those taking to the stage were Rock School, LP Winds and Percussion and vocal duets.
Once again, the Music and Media Department have put on a series of wonderful shows in the safe hands of the student and staff tech crew, alongside refreshments from the Friends of Leighton Park Music.
