Why do students at Leighton Park call their teachers by their first names?

Because it works.

We’re the top school in Berkshire for academic progress and 14th out of all boarding schools in England. Our students achieve more than expected, year after year. And they do so in a culture built not on hierarchy, but on mutual respect.

At Leighton Park, there’s no “Sir”, “Miss”, or “Mr/Mrs”. Just Claire, David, Leni, Kees – our teachers earn their authority through the quality of their teaching, not the title in front of their name.

This simple shift says a lot. It fosters closer, more supportive relationships between students and teachers. It creates an environment where young people feel seen, heard and respected – so important to our sector-leading pastoral care and student wellbeing.

It also does something else:

It quietly screens out the kind of teacher who needs to be called “Sir” to feel in control.

Our staff don’t need that. They’re confident in their subject knowledge. Passionate about helping students find their voice. And deeply committed to supporting young people to figure out who they are, what they want to achieve, and how they’ll make a difference.

Because education shouldn’t be about feeding students information.
It’s about nurturing identity, purpose and possibility.

First names. First class progress.
That’s Leighton Park.
