Amnesty International have identified nine political prisoners believed to have been unfairly detained because of their beliefs. The ‘Write for Rights’ campaign aims to engage a broad community in writing to governments to protest about the situation and campaign for the release of these prisoners. Pre-written letters were available in Oakview during lunchtime on Wednesday 11th December for students and staff to sign before they are sent to Amnesty International headquarters in London. Here they will be collated with the letters from Write for Rights events across the UK and sent directly to the appropriate governments, raising awareness of the strength of global public opinion.
Ethical Changemaking Scholar, Riccardo (Lower Sixth) commented: “This campaign is valuable because it gives people like us, students, a chance to get involved in politics and things we don’t normally have a chance to get involved in and we can also have a good impact by releasing people who have been unjustly incarcerated.”
Fellow Amnesty International member, Saarvi, added, “It’s important to join in the Write for Rights initiative because these people have been recognised globally by Amnesty as suffering. In the world of technology and advancements we should not compromise on people’s human rights. We should make sure that nobody is oppressed or undermined because of who they are and what they stand up for.”
Diana (Upper Sixth) reflected: “It’s important to have an Amnesty International Club at Leighton Park because we can bring together students of a similar mindset of wanting to create change and through doing that we can collaborate together and create things like this event. We can work together to bring them out in reality, rather than just thinking about them all the time. We can make a difference.”
