On Thursday 23rd January an enthusiastic group of Year 7 theatre-goers made their way to the Progress Theatre in Reading for an entertaining evening, courtesy of Terry Pratchett’s famous DiscWorld series. The dramatisation of one of his fantasy novels, ‘Wyrd Sisters’, is based on the three witches from Macbeth but is strongly influenced by Hamlet, King Lear and fair dollop of farce!
The witches, Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and Magrat Garlick, provided much of the hilarity, especially the obsession of the youngest witch, Magrat, with anything related to sourcery, witchcraft and occult clichés.
The plot is fairly complicated involving murder, a hidden crown, a royal child being given to a travelling circus, time travel, a play within a play, yet more murder, madness, and finally a happy ever after ending, after a quick twist for an identity swap; it certainly gave our Year 7s plenty of stage action to follow!
They had a great time broadening their understanding of narrative and dramatic devices, enjoyed spotting the Shakespearean references and were pleased to be spending time with their friends at such an interesting show.
Dom (Year 7) was delighted by the experience, “The play was outstanding, the jokes and lighting was fantastic! I would definitely go again!”
Head of English, Tom Rawlings, who organised the trip commented, “It was great to see Year 7 really enjoying and engaging with theatre and I had so many interesting conversations about literature and theatre with them. It was my birthday the next day and they made it a great treat for me.”
