100 Challenge for Charity

Students in Field and Reckitt Houses have been involved in two separate challenges over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend inspired by Sir Captain Tom Moore.

Amie Cull, Acting House Mistress, together with the pastoral team in Reckitt, decided that this term Reckitt would be supporting the Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice, a local charity which supports children and families suffering from critical and life-threatening conditions. Reckitt are starting their support by taking part in the 100 challenge! This is in honour of Sir Captain Tom Moore, who on Thursday 30th April would be celebrating his 101st birthday. The members of the House were encouraged to complete their challenges by Monday 3rd May so the Bank Holiday provided the perfect opportunity to leap into action!

Lucy (Year 9) spent the weekend in her kitchen, baking 100 scrumptious cupcakes which she then brought into school to sell as a fundraiser on the Tuesday morning. The cakes looked absolutely delicious and with plenty of teenage appetites around there were no shortage of hungry snackers keen to support her culinary efforts.

“I love making and decorating cupcakes and was inspired to do something after watching the video in collect about Sir Captain Tom’s fundraising of walking 100 laps of his garden.” said Lucy, “It took me three hours baking the cupcakes and the remainder of the day decorating them. I sold 3/5 of cakes on first day they sold very quickly at break time and most of the remainder on the second day.  Kimya (Year 9) bought 15 cupcakes!  I think she shared them with other people and didn’t eat them all herself! The few I had left I shared with my Tutor Group. They sold for £1 per cupcake on the first day and 50p per cupcake on the second day.  I raised about £70.”

Millie, supporting the Reckitt Challenge on behalf of Field House, and Harriet (Year 10) ventured to their local park in Wokingham and retrieved over 400 pieces of rubbish during their Sunday morning litter pick. With the initial aim of 100 pieces each the girls were driven by their desire to see Cantley Park a tidier place and collected far more than they had intended! “I was inspired to do this by a Collect that we were given on Captain Tom Moore and his achievements.” said Harriet, “The most unusual thing that we picked up was a bent traffic cone which someone had written “bent Gerta” on the outside of. If you are thinking of doing your own 100 Challenge I would say pick to do something that you enjoy and won’t get bored of. It takes a while!” Lucy agrees; “Just do it!  You can do it! It may take a while but it’s worth it!”

Proud of the students, Amie remarked, “Thank you so much Harriet and Millie! That’s great! I am so glad you got involved and so pleased you chose something so important too! Lucy’s cupcakes were another great idea, and popular! By the time I got there she didn’t have many left, they looked great too!”
